🌮 How to Make the BEST Torta (Mexican Sandwich)

While “torta” can mean cake or flatbread in Spanish, here I’m talking about the Mexican sandwich version—and let me tell you, I love a good torta! They’re similar to tacos but more filling thanks to the bread, and the possibilities for delicious fillings are endless.

Traditionally, tortas use telera or bolillo rolls, but you can also use a crusty sandwich roll or even a baguette if needed. Toast the bread, add your fillings, and you’ve got a perfect sandwich ready to devour.

🥩 Meat Fillings

Some of my favorites:

  • Carnitas (pork)
  • Carne asada (beef)
  • Breaded or pan-fried chicken (like chicken parmesan)
  • Birria (use meat + consommé from tacos)
  • Barbacoa
  • Shredded rotisserie chicken
  • Chorizo, bacon, or ham

🥗 Fresh Ingredients

Top your torta with:

  • Shredded lettuce or cabbage
  • Tomato slices
  • Onion
  • Jicama
  • Radish
  • Sliced avocado
  • Peppers (jalapeños, serrano, etc.)
  • Cilantro
  • Lime juice
  • Refried beans

🥑 Sauces & Spreads

Make it even better with:

  • Guacamole
  • Salsa
  • Mango salsa
  • Salsa verde
  • Pico de gallo
  • Chipotle sauce
  • Enchilada sauce (for an oven-baked torta option)
  • Sour cream

🍳 Breakfast Tortas

Yes—you can totally make a torta for breakfast! Think of it as a sandwich version of breakfast tacos or burritos.

  • Add a fried egg, breakfast sausage, or other breakfast taco ingredients.
  • Combine with avocado, cheese, and fresh veggies for a hearty morning meal.

🔪 How to Assemble a Torta

  1. Slice the bolillo or telera bread in half if needed. Toast it in a dry skillet over medium heat.
  2. Spread on any sauces or spreads (guacamole, chipotle sauce, etc.).
  3. Layer on your meat filling, then add tomato, lettuce, and other toppings as desired.
  4. Optional: Add slices of cheese inside the bread while toasting to melt it slightly.

💡 Tips:

  • Warm pre-cooked meat before adding to your sandwich.
  • If the torta is too messy, wrap it in aluminum foil like a burrito—it keeps it warm and easier to eat.
  • Best enjoyed the day it’s made, though components like meat, cheese, or toppings can be prepped ahead and stored separately in the fridge.

Customizable, hearty, and full of flavor, a homemade torta is a delicious way to enjoy the taste of Mexico right at home. Grab your favorite bread and start layering!
